TYPES OF ANIMALS THAN CAN BE USED FOR QURBANI 

In principle, specific animals can only be used for Qurbani. Wild animals such as deer, Kudu, Springbok etc. cannot be used for Qurbani.

The following animals can only be used for Qurbani irrespective of their gender:

Camels (5 Years old)
Cows/Bull (2 years old)
Goats (1 year old)
Sheep (1 year old or  6 months old if it resembles a 1 year old)
Buffalo (2 Years old)

WHAT DO I LOOK FOR WHEN PURCHASING MY SHEEP/GOAT FOR QURBANI?

In principle, the animal for Qurbani should be free from any major defects. A significant defect in the animal will invalidate the Qurbani. Major defects for an animal are as follows:

An animal that both its eyes are blind.

An animal that one of its eyes are noticeably defective.

Such a limp animal that cannot walk to the slaughterhouse.

Such a sick animal that is apparently sick.

Such an old animal that its marrow has depleted.

An animal that the entire or most of its ear or tail is cut off. 

The best goat to slaughter for Qurbani is the goat that is big, fat, white and black, big horned, and castrated. It is mentioned in a Hadith:

وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ كَانَ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يُضَحِّيَ اشْتَرَى كَبْشَيْنِ عَظِيمَيْنِ سَمِينَيْنِ أَقْرَنَيْنِ أَمْلَحَيْنِ مَوْجُوءَيْنِ فَذَبَحَ أَحَدَهُمَا عَنْ أُمَّتِهِ لِمَنْ شَهِدَ لِلَّهِ بِالتَّوْحِيدِ وَشَهِدَ لَهُ بِالْبَلاَغِ وَذَبَحَ الآخَرَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَنْ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم (ابن ماجة 3241)

Translation – Abu Hurairah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrates that when Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) wanted to do Qurbani, he bought two big, fat, big horned, black and white, and castrated rams. He (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) did the first one on behalf of his ummah, those who believed in the oneness of Allah and that he (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has conveyed his message. And he (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) slaughtered the second one for himself and his family.

ALLOCATING QURBANI SHARES OF A COW FOR THE MARHOOMS

It is permissible to make qurbani of a cow and allocate the reward of the different shares to all. You may also make intention of passing the reward (isale thawab) for your living parents and all the marhooms in the shares.

QURBANI OF A GIFTED ANIMAL

It is permissible for one to slaughter a gifted sheep for Qurbani on condition that one makes the intention for Qurbani.

QURBANI ON BEHALF OF THE DECEASED

It is related about Alī Radiallāhu Anhu that he used to perform Qurbānī on behalf of Nabī Sallallāhu Alaihi Wa Sallam after his demise.
