VIRTUES OF QURBANI 

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ كَانَ لَهُ سَعَةٌ وَلَمْ يُضَحِّ فَلاَ يَقْرَبَنَّ مُصَلاَّنَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّه ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ كَانَ لَهُ سَعَةٌ وَلَمْ يُضَحِّ فَلاَ يَقْرَبَنَّ مُصَلاَّنَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ 

(Hadith 3242- Sunan ibn majah)

Translation: “Whoever can afford it, but does not offer a sacrifice, let him not come near our prayer place.”

قَالَ قَالَ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا هَذِهِ الأَضَاحِيُّ قَالَ ‏"‏ سُنَّةُ أَبِيكُمْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالُوا فَمَا لَنَا فِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏"‏ بِكُلِّ شَعَرَةٍ حَسَنَةٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالُوا فَالصُّوفُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏"‏ بِكُلِّ شَعَرَةٍ مِنَ الصُّوفِ حَسَنَةٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏  

(Sunnan ibn majah- Hadith 3247)

Translation: “The Companions of the Messenger of Allah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what are these sacrifices?’ He said: ‘The Sunnah of your father Ibrahim.’ They said: ‘What is there for us in them, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘For every hair, one merit.’ They said: ‘What about wool, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘For every hair of wool, one merit.’”

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم‏ "‏ الْفِطْرُ يَوْمَ يُفْطِرُ النَّاسُ وَالأَضْحَى يَوْمَ يُضَحِّي النَّاسُ ‏"‏ 

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 802)

Translation: The Messenger of Allah said: "Al-Fitr is the day that the people break the fast, and Al-Adha is the day that the people sacrifice."

{لَنْ يَنَالَ اللَّهَ لُحُومُهَا وَلَا دِمَاؤُهَا وَلَكِنْ يَنَالُهُ التَّقْوَى مِنْكُمْ} [الحج: 37]

Translation: It is neither their flesh nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is your Taqwa that reaches Him…

WHAT IS QURBANI AND UPON WHOM IS QURBANI WAJIB?
Qurbani is to sacrifice an animal during the days of Eid-ul-Adha. Qurbani is compulsory upon every adult Muslim who is a Muqeem (non-traveller) and owns wealth equal to or more than the Nisaab of Zakaah during the 10th,11th or 12th of Dhul-Hijjah.

WHAT ARE THE TIMES AND DAYS OF QURBANI?
The time for Qurbani begins after Eid salah on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah until the sunset of 12th of Dhul Hijjah. The best day for Qurbani is the day of Eid al-Adha (10th of Dhul Hijjah), followed by the 11th and then the 12th of Dhul Hijjah. 

If one is doing his Qurbani in another country, then the country where the Qurbani is taking place will be taken into consideration. The country where the person is present will not be taken into consideration.

IS QURBANI OBLIGATORY ON US IN OUR HOME COUNTRY IN ADDITION TO THE HAJJ QURBANI?

In principle, Qurbani is not obligatory upon a musaafir (traveller). Therefore, if you do not intend staying in any of the places mentioned for fifteen days or more successively, Qurbani will not be obligatory upon you. If you do intend staying in any of the cities aforementioned for fifteen days or more successively, then according to the Shari'ah you will not be considered as a traveller, though you may be away from home.

IS QURBANI COMPULSORY ON A PERSON WHO PERFORMS HAJJ E TAMATTU?

A person performing Hajj-e-Tammatu' will sacrifice an animal  on the 10th Dhul- Hijjah for the purpose of Hajj. This sacrifice is known as Damm-e-Shukr, and must be done within the boundaries of the Haram. This sacrifice is part of the Hajj, and should not be confused with Qurbani.

Qurbani is to sacrifice an animal during the days of Eid-ul-Adha. Qurbani is compulsory upon every adult Muslim who is a Muqeem(non traveller)and owns wealth equal to or more than the Nisaab of Zakaah during the 10th,11th or 12th of Dhul-Hijjah. Qurbani can be done at home or wherever it may be convenient.Therefore, if a person is a Muqeem in Makkah (staying more than 15 days) and has more than the Nisaab then both the sacrifices, namely Damm -e- Shukr and Qurbani will be compulsory. If his stay is less than 15 days, then only the Damm-e-Shukr will be binding. Damm-e-Shukr has to be done in the Haram area. Qurbani may be done anywhere even in South Africa.
