Gum Recession treatment - Is it permissible?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Braces pull the teeth out of their natural position. The constant compressive forces applied to the bone of the mouth during braces can lead to inflammation, which may cause the bone to move. For many people, if they lose bone around teeth, the gums will follow the bone which creates gum recession.[1] This may lead to exposure of the roots which in turn cause the teeth to be extra sensitive causing discomfort. Gaps in-between the gum and tooth also allow disease-causing bacteria to build up.[2] 

Traditional gum recession surgery extracts healthy gum tissue from the roof of the mouth and uses it to build the gum back up where it has receded. The gums are then stitched up and left to heal.[3]

The graft is either obtained from one’s own tissue, donor tissue, animal tissue or it is synthetic tissue.

This surgery is akin to skin grafting and will be permissible provided the tissue used is not from an impure animal. Accordingly, porcine tissue will not be permissible. However, other tissues will be permissible.[4]

A newer incision and suture-free procedure known as Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation is recommended by some dentitions. A tiny hole with a needle is made in the gum tissue. Thereafter, specially designed instruments are used to guide gums over the receded part of the tooth. Since there is no incision and no suturing, patients can expect minimal postoperative symptoms (pain, swelling, and bleeding).[5] This method will also be permissible.

وفي الهندية: إذا أراد الرجل أن يقطع إصبعا زائدة أو شيئا آخر قال نصير رحمه الله تعالى إن كان الغالب على من قطع مثل ذلك الهلاك فإنه لا يفعل وإن كان الغالب هو النجاة فهو في سعة من ذلك ... من له سلعة زائدة يريد قطعها إن كان الغالب الهلاك فلا يفعل وإلا فلا بأس به كذا في خزانة المفتين

قال الشيخ العلامة المفتي تقي العثماني: والحاصل أن كل ما يفعل في الجسم من زيادة أو نقص من أجل الزينة بما يجعل الزيادة أو النقصان مستمرا مع الجسم وبما يبدو منه أنه كان في أصل الحلقة هكذا؛ فانه تلبيس وتغيير منهي عنه. واما ما تزينت به المرأة لزوجها من تحمير الايدي او الشفاه او العارضين بما لا يلتبس بأصل الخلقة فانه ليس داخلا في النهي عند جمهور العلماء وأما قطع الاصبع الزائدة ونحوها فإنه ليس تغييرا خلق الله وإنه من قبيل إزالة عيب او مرض فأجازه أكثر العلماء خلافا لبعضه
