Answer
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuhu.
Hereunder is the Du’a in reference:
Translation: “Oh Allah, I take refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being overpowered by men” (Sahih-Al-Bukhari/2893)
The above Du’a is not exclusively for depression, as can be understood from the translation, however, the broadness of the Du’a also includes seeking refuge from depression. Below are a few more Du’as that should be recited during such times of difficulty:
Translation: “There is none worthy of worship besides You (Oh Allah), You are pure and free from all faults, (I am at fault) it is me who is a wrongdoer” (Al-Ambiyaa/ 87)
Translation: “There is no god except Allah, the All-Mighty, the Forbearing; there is no god except Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne; there is no god except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth and Lord of the noble Throne.” (Sahih-Muslim/ 2092)
Translation: “Oh Allah, I seek refuge in You from the distress of trial, from the lowest level of misery, from the perversity of fate, and from the malicious rejoicing of enemies” (Sahih-Al-Bukhari/ 6347)
Translation: “Oh you! The-Eternal! Oh you! The-Maintainer! It is Your mercy that we seek” (Sunan-At-Tirmidhi/ 3524)
Translation: “O Allah, there is no ease except that which You have made easy, and you are such, that at your wish, difficulty can also be made easy” (Sahih-Ibn-Hibban/ 974)
All the above referred Du’as are divine and full of blessings. They are all effective in relieving difficulty and depression. However, these Dua’s are more than just words to be verbally recited. Every aspect of Islam is far beyond a plain lip-service. These prayers contain strong meanings, vigorous reminders, and deep lessons.
These prayers deserve contemplation and are longing to be partnered with humility and faith. When the rights of these prayers are fulfilled; when they are given the time and thought they deserve, when the lessons they teach are learnt, when their advices are engraved in our hearts, and then finally they are presented before Allah Ta’ala with humility and faith, the fruits will be seen.
And Allah Ta ‘āla Knows Best
