Is Zakat payable upon the gifts we keep aside for our children?
Question
Asalamualikum
I have 8 years daughter ( Down syndrome ) and 4 years old son, if I want to keep some jewelry in the name of my daughter for her future and want to keep some cash for my son for his future education.
Is zakat payable on that amount which we have kept for them.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
If you gift the money to your children and you relinquish all rights over the money, then that money will belong to your children and will be an amanah (trust) by you. In this situation the money will not be zakatable.[i]
The responsibility of dispensing zakat will fall upon the children when they reach puberty (buloogh) if the jewellery and money reach the nisaab amount.

الاب إذا وكل رجلا يبيع شيء لابنه الصغير او بشراء شيء له او بالخصومة فهو جائز وان كان الاب في معني الوكيل بالتصرف في مال الصغير
العناية شرح الهداية (9/ 33)
(وَإِذَا وَهَبَ الْأَبُ لِابْنِهِ الصَّغِيرِ هِبَةً مَلَكَهَا الِابْنُ بِالْعَقْدِ) وَالْقَبْضُ فِيهِ بِإِعْلَامِ مَا وَهَبَهُ لَهُ، وَلَيْسَ الْإِشْهَادُ بِشَرْطٍ إلَّا أَنَّ فِيهِ احْتِيَاطًا لِلتَّحَرُّزِ عَنْ جُحُودِ الْوَرَثَةِ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهِ أَوْ جُحُودِهِ بَعْدَ إدْرَاكِ الْوَلَدِ (لِأَنَّهُ) أَيْ لِأَنَّ الْمَوْهُوبَ (فِي قَبْضِ الْأَبِ فَيَنُوبُ عَنْ قَبْضِ الْهِبَةِ) وَيَدُ مُودَعِهِ كَيَدِهِ

وإذا وهب الأب لابنه الصغير هبة ملكها الابن بالعقد فإن وهب له أجنبي هبة تمت بقبض الأب
