My husband has type 11 diabetes. Should he be fasting or is he exempt?
Question
Slms. My husband has type 11 diabetes. He is on metformin 850, diaglucide 60mg and aspavor 10 mg all twice a day. He has been fasting but he has the following symptooms - he is extremely tired, sleeps most of the day, has headaches, is very dazed and out of it, immune system very low he keeps getting the flu even though he had the flu vaccine, gets sick easily. His concentration levels are very low as well. He struggles to apply his mind and body for his daily work. Should he be fasting or is he exempt?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, if a person is so ill that he cannot fast or experiences much difficulty in fasting, as is the condition of your husband, he will be excused from fasting in Ramadan. When he recovers, he will have to make qadha [make up] for the missed fasts. [1][2]
We advise you to consult your doctor on the present condition of your husband. He may adjust the medications which may change his present condition.
