Fatwa #287336 April 2014United Kingdom
Muslim women studying medicine.
Question
My question is regarding muslim women studying medicine. A question similar to mine has been answered before but I was wondering if you could please advise me on my situation as it is slightly different to the query in the similar question.
I wish to study medicine, I have taken a gap year with the intention of re-applying. I intend on treating female patients only, once I have graduated, however while studying I may have to treat males. Though I will try my best to avoid such situations where I have to treat males, there may be a time where I have to. Please can you advise me on what to do.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Sister in Islam,
It is apparent from your question that treating males while studying medicine is bothering you. Alhamdulillah, this due to your consciousness of your Imān, Rasūlullah e says:
إِذَا حَاكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ شَيْءٌ فَدَعْهُ
When there is doubt in your heart concerning something, then leave it[1]
Accordingly, you should choose another option.
And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
