Fatwa #2888516 May 2014United Arab Emirates

How can we say women cannot read medicine at university when we say Muslim women must be treated by female doctors?

Question

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

With due respect to i would like to ask regarding Fatwa No. 28733

In Whic a self Conscious sister asks about studying Medicine.

My Question to the learned people is, What happens to the Sister's of the Ummah if they dont get a Doctor that too a Lady Doctor who is Muslim & at the same time Pious.

If the Women are stopped from learning & practicuing then who will take care of the Women from Ummah.

In many situations we are asked by the scholars & Mufti's to get an authentic view from a Muslim Pious Doctor, What is is your opinion on this?

Especialy women have more problems expressing their calmaities to a male doctor

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh.

In most places of the world, there is no scarcity of female doctors, and female patients can request to be treated exclusively by women. Hence, there is no general need for Muslim women to study medicine.
