Fatwa #1229110 August 2004South Africa

What measures can a male physician take to ensure that female patients to not cause feelings of desire?

Question

Salaams. I am an 18 year old 1st year student of medicine. It has just occurred to me that, even after I have completed my studies and free from the trials of co-education, I will be 'tested' with ghayr-mahram females (in the form of patients) for the rest of my life. I am terribly afraid for my Imaan. Kindly advise. Jazakallah.

Answer

In the profession you have chosen, the treatment of women is inevitable. Our advice to you would be as follows:

1. Control the gaze.

2. Examine only when necessary.

3. Only examine the affected area.

4. As far as possible, avoid being alone with female patients.

5. Bear in mind Taqwa of Allah at all times.
