Fatwa #809721 March 2003United States of America

Are 'henna tattoos' allowed in Islam--- meaning not just a henna stain, but actual flower/leaf, and geometric designs?

Answer

Abu Hurayra (Radhiallaahu Anhu) said that he heard Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) saying, ?Do not adorn yourself with tattoos.? (Bukhari vol.2 pg.880; Qadeemi)

In another narration, Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) cursed those people who put tattoos on their bodies. (Ibid pg.889)

In view of these Ahaadith, it is not permissible to put any type of tattoos on one?s body even though pictures of inanimate objects are known.
