Chronic medication and fasting

Question

As Salaamu Alaikum WA Rahmathulaahi Wa Barakhatu

Dear Mufti,

I suffer from severe lupus and arthritis which requires me to take medication 3 times a day diligently.

Over the past year my condition has worsened thus making it even more imperative for me to take my medication.

My concern is what do I do in Ramadan as I don't know what to do with regards to my fasting.

Your advice and assistance herein will greatly be appreciated.

Jazakallah

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, if one fears that one will become sick by fasting or one’s sickness will be aggravated by fasting, then such a person is excused from fasting. However, such a person will be have to keep Qadha fast for each missed fast in the future when one is able to do so.[1]

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
