I was concered that she will be held accountable if she says no to me fasting.I love my wife and I am concerned for her akhira . Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
We commend your enthusiasm to fast on Mondays and Thursdays. There are many Ahadith that encourage fasting on Mondays and Thursdays:
Translation: Ai’shah (Radhiyallahu Anha) narrated: Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would try to fast on Mondays and Thursdays. (Tirmidhi 745)
Translation: Abu Hurairah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Deeds of people are presented (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays. So I like that my actions be presented while I am fasting." (Jami -at-Tirmidhi Vol.1 Pg.157 – H.M. Sa’eed Company)
While Rasulullah (Salallahu Alaihi Wa Salaam) fasted regularly on Mondays and Thursdays, he would occasionally opt not to fast on these days.[1]
While Shariah encourages us to observe Nafl(optional) fasts, we are also encouraged to fulfill the rights of our spouses. We are advised to treat our wives with kindness and compassion.
Consider the following Ayah and Hadith:
Translation: “Live with them (your wives) with kindness” (Surah Nisaa, Verse 19)
Translation: “The best amongst you are those who are best to their wives.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3/148).
Your enthusiasm to fast is highly commendable. The feeling of guilt that you experience when you do not fast is also an indication of your Iman.
However, we advise you to empathize with your wife and consider her sentiments. Your wife will not be held accountable for advising you to leave out an optional fast. When she advises you to leave out an optional fast, it is not to express disinterest in fasting or an aversion to it. Rather, the fact of the matter is that she pines for your company when eating as she feels lonely.
You have stated that she would like to fast but is unable to due to health reasons. This emphasizes the fact that she will not be held accountable for advising you not to fast.
In fact, she will receive reward for her Niyyat of wanting to fast and for making Sabr on health issues as well as nursing a child.
Your wife depends on your physical and emotional support.
We advise you to provide her with the support she needs as it is her right. Focus on gaining reward for yourself by supporting your spouse instead of gaining reward by keeping an optional fast.
Apart from Mondays and Thursdays, it is also Sunnah to fast on the 13th, 14th and 15th of every month.[2]
If it is possible for you to fast on other days of the month such as the 13th14th and 15th of every month then do so. If you wish to keep a Nafl (optional fast) on any particular day and you are not able to as you are engaged in the Khidmah of your wife, then you will be rewarded for your desire to fast as well as for serving your wife and providing physical and emotional support to her.
And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
