Fatwa #468214 January 2002Australia

What was the role of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him)?

Question

Did he have the ability to declare what is halal and haram? What about the verses in the Qur'an that state Muhammad did not have the authority to make such claims? Please provide a detailed answer.

Answer

The primary role of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) was:
a) To recite the verses of Allah to his followers
b) To make their Tazkiya - purify them (by providing solutions to spiritual
shortcomings, pride, anger, etc.)
c) To teach them the Kitaab (containing the orders of Allah Ta'ala) and
explaining what is Halaal and Haraam.

Allah Ta'ala says in Surah A'raaf verse 157, 'The Nabi of Allah commands
good and prohibits evil. He makes Halaal for the Sahaaba the pure things and
makes Haraam for them evil things.'

and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best
