What is the value of Fidya?

Question

I have missed some fasts and wish to pay fidyah. Can you inform me how much fidyah is?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, Fidyah (expiatory payment for Ramadan) is only paid by a person whose sickness is permanent and there is no hope of recovery.

If one is expected to recover from their illness, they are not permitted to pay Fidyah, rather they will be required to make Qadha of the fasts missed.

In the enquired situation, if you are incapable of keeping fasts and have no hope of recovery then you must offer Fidyah for every missed fast. The value of this Fidya is the same as Sadaqatul fitr, which is the value of 1.6 kg of wheat or 3.2 kg of barley or their equivalent value in your area.[i] The present average value of 1.6kg of wheat is approximately £3.50.

However, if you are capable of fasting or you are expected to recover from any illnesses you are currently afflicted by, you must make Qadha of the fasts missed and paying Fidyah will not be sufficient.

Note: You state that you missed some fasts. If you missed the fasts by breaking the fasts without a valid reason in Shariah, then kaffarah too will be compulsory which is 60 consecutive fasts and Qadha for each missed fast

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
