Can I hug my mother-in-law?

Question

Is it fine for me to hug my wife’s mother? I see her as I see my biological mother. There are no sexual feelings involved.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Shariah advises us to be kind and considerate to our in-laws. This is also a Sunnat of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).

A son-in-law is a Mahram to his mother-in-law.[1] A Mahram is one with whom marriage is permanently prohibited.

There are two types of Mahrams:

1) A Mahram through blood such as one’s mother or son. There is generally no physical attraction between such Mahrams.

2) A Mahram through Nikah such as one’s mother-in-law or son-in-law. Physical attraction may exist between such Mahrams.

In principle, the laws of Hijab are not necessary between Mahrams. Accordingly, a mother-in-law and son-in-law may speak to each other. However, the relationship should end there. A verbal relationship should not extend to a physical relationship. They should display utmost modesty and shame when interacting with each other.[2]

It is important to draw a distinction between the two types of Mahrams. Unfortunately, due to the immorality of the times we live in, we are faced with many incidents of immoral behaviour amongst in-laws which lead to the break-up of marriages. We therefore advise all such Mahrams to adopt precaution when interacting with one another. We advise against hugging one’s mother-in-law.

Consider the following Ahadith:

إِذَا لَمْ تَسْتَحِي فَاصْنَعْ مَا شِئْتَ

When you begin to lack modesty, then do whatever you wish. (Bukhari 3225)

الإِيمَانُ بِضْعٌ وَسِتُّونَ شُعْبَةً، وَالحَيَاءُ شُعْبَةٌ مِنَ الإِيمَانِ

Imaan has more than sixty branches and Hayaa (modesty) is an extremely important branch of Imaan.(Bukhari 8)

الحَيَاءُ مِنَ الإِيمَانِ، وَالإِيمَانُ فِي الجَنَّةِ، وَالبَذَاءُ مِنَ الجَفَاءِ، وَالجَفَاءُ فِي النَّارِ

"Modesty is from Iman, and Iman leads you to Paradise. Shamelessness is from futile things, and futile things lead you to the fire of Hell. (Tirmidhi 2009)
