Can one make masaḥ over pomade?
Question
Assalamu alaikum, do hair and beard conditioning products like pomade act as barriers for wudu and ghusl? Such products tend to be made from oils and some wax and have the consistency of Vaseline. One would rub them into the hair or beard so there would be no clumps or thick layers but are used to condition and shape.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, it is permissible to make masaḥ (wipe) over a water-permeable product. If the product is impermeable, the masaḥ will not be valid. Accordingly, masaḥ will be permissible over water-based pomades. However, masaḥ will not be valid on an oil or wax-based pomade.[i]
