Can a woman swim when menstruating?
Question
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته Is it permissible for a woman to swim if she’s on her periods? She wants to swim in her own premises, and she is not bleeding heavily, so there’s no danger of blood being visible in the pool. Jazakallah khayr
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is permissible for a woman to swim during menses. However, if she swims in a small pool, the water may become impure due to the flow of blood. In that case, if anyone else swims in that pool, that person will become impure and will have to wash his body to cleanse himself.
If a pool is not flowing and is less than 5X5 meters in dimension, it will be considered a small pool.[1]
