Is Martial Arts, Acupuncture permissible?

Question

Salam alaycom, me and my wife are both reverts of European origin and have found that many things in North American specifically Canada, need to be researched and not accepted at face value. In our journey gathering information on industries, practices, schools, theories etc. Much have many roots in occult practices or non Islamic traditions. This being said, what is the stance on a school philosophy like Waldorf which appears great and natural and was founded by Rudolph Steiner. Digging deep into this founder and his beliefs we begin to see the truth steeped in occult practices, racial and magic traditions. This notion of researching things can help one make decisions however it’s difficult to find the answer to my question. 1. Is marital arts and it’s origin, rituals and founders make it haram for Muslims? 2. Is acupuncture and it’s origin, state of mind, founders, etc make it haram for Muslims? On the surface both of these practices seem demonic and can invite Jinn ie. The founders, their beliefs and ritualistic practices. Please clarify, Jazak’Allah khair

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Brother-in-Islam,

We commend you on your caution and enthusiasm in protecting your Imaan.

In principle, if an action has pagan or un-Islamic origins, this does not necessarily render it haram. This logic assumes that since the origin of a practice is un-Islamic, despite its development and changes over time, it is still haram today. We have to assess each practice as it stands today, and investigate whether or not, the practises still represent those beliefs or not. Presently many sports have pagan origins, but they have evolved such that they have no link to those origins at all.

Martial arts are systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat. Though studied for various reasons, broadly speaking, martial arts share a single objective: to defeat a person physically or to defend oneself from physical threat. Some martial arts are linked to spiritual or religious beliefs/philosophies such as Buddhism, Daoism or Shinto while others have their own spiritual/non-spiritual code of honour.[1]

Martial arts, according to the above definition, has two aspects attached to it, the physical training and the religious aspect. It is common, that many people practice martial arts for the physical training, without engaging in the religious aspect or even knowing that a spiritual/religious side to martial arts exist. Therefore, if a person practises only upon the physical aspect with the intention of self-defence, fitness and physical well-being, then this will not only be halal, it will be commendable.[2] The spiritual/religious aspect such as Budhism, Taoism, spiritual meditation, has to and must be avoided.

Ultimately, whether a one should participate in martial arts depends primarily upon you and the particular martial arts you wish to involve yourself in. If the martial arts promotes its beliefs and philosophy, then it will not be permissible to take part. If you can divorce the practice of the martial art from the philosophy and beliefs, then it will be permissible for you to participate.[3][4]

Other haram aspects should also be avoided such as bowing[5][6], exposing the awrah(area between navel and knees), hitting on the face/head[7], intermingling of sexes etc.

With regards to acupuncture, there is nothing in Islam that forbid Muslims from resorting to alternative therapies or treatments so long as they do not involve beliefs or practices contrary to Islam.

Acupuncture is an integral part of traditional medicine in certain parts of the world like China; and it has been found to be effective and beneficial in some cases.[8] Certain controlled experiments in acupuncture have also confirmed its beneficial effects in certain kinds of treatments. It would therefore be permissible to undergo acupuncture as a treatment.
