Are we allowed to use or sell hemp oil?

Question

Are we allowed to use or sell hemp oil ?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh

Hemp oil is derived by pressing hemp seeds. Hemp seeds come from the plant, Cannabis Sativa. Both Cannabis and Hemp are derived from the Cannabis Sativa plant. However, hemp seeds contain very little THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the main psychoactive component found in cannabis. Hemp seed oil can be consumed or applied externally.[i]

The Shariah has prohibited Cannabis due do its psychoactive effects. Consider the following hadeeth:

عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ خَمْرٌ وَكُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ (رواه أبو داود: 3679)

Translation: Ibn ‘Umar reported the Apostle of Allah () as saying: Every intoxicant is forbidden. (Abu Dawud: 3679)

Accordingly, since hemp oil does not intoxicate, it will be permissible to consume hemp seed oil and apply it on one’s body.

Furthermore, if one’s country allows one to sell hemp oil, it will be permissible for one to do so.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
