Raising the index finger in Salaah, Where is this practice established?

Question

As-salaamu aleykum, I would like to know the Islamic significance of pointing the index of the hand upwards. May Allaah bless you.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In Islam raising the index finger signifies tawīd, the Oneness of Allah Taʿālā. It is a confirmed sunnah to raise the index finger in alāh when one recites “Lā ilāha” (There is no God), and lowers it when affirming, “illallah” (except Allah) in the tashhud. It is not a sunnah to raise the index finger every time one proclaims the Oneness of Allah.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
