Is covering the body a condition for the validity of wudhu?
Question
Assalamualaykum. Is it permissible to take wudu in t-shirts and pants for a Muslimah in her home? pants expose ankles and t-shirt is tight fitting at times. i come from a modern society and have gotten used to wearing modern outfits (shirts, pants 3/4 pants that expose ankles) within my home in the midst of my father and brothers. am i allowed to take wudu in these clothes? of course, during Salah, i wear my complete prayer suit. please help as this will ease my struggles in establishing my prayers. thank you.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Respected Sister.
May Allah Ta'alah increase you in your zeal to follow the correct rulings of Shari'ah.
In principle, covering the body is not a condition for the validity of wudhu. This is contrary to the conditions of salaah. In salaah, if certain parts of the body are exposed, the salaah will not be valid. Similarly, if one intends wudhu whilst bathing, one’s wudhu will be valid. Hence, your wudhu with your ankles exposed will be valid.
