Do I have to do iddah even though it has been three years?
Question
My husband said the word "talaaq" to me 3 times in one sitting out of anger during my menstrual cycle. We found out 3 years later (present) that this was a valid divorce and being on my cycle didnt invalidate it. Do I have to do my iddah?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Sister in Islam,
Your iddah commenced from the day your husband issued you the three divorces and your ‘iddat terminated upon the completion of three menstrual cycles. Since it has been three years after your husband issued you the three divorces and if you have completed three menstrual cycles, then your ‘iddat has ended at that point.
If you stayed with your ex-husband for the three years after he issued you the three divorces, you should make tawbah (repent) and make istighfaar (seek forgiveness) from Allah T’aala on that.
