Criterion between the allies and enemies of Shaytaan

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The answer is simple.

Whoever is the friend of Allah is the enemy of Shaytaan and whoever is the friend of Shaytaan is the enemy of Allah. [1]

This is understood from the following verse:

اللَّهُ وَلِيُّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُخْرِجُهُمْ مِنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَوْلِيَاؤُهُمُ الطَّاغُوتُ يُخْرِجُونَهُمْ مِنَ النُّورِ إِلَى الظُّلُمَاتِ أُولَئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ 

Translation: “Allah is the protector (ally) of those who believe, bringing them from the multitude of darkness (kufr, shirk, falsehood) into the light (Islam the truth). As for the disbelievers, their allies are the taaghoot (Shayateen), who bring out of the light and (take them back) into the multitude of darkness. These are the people of the fire, and they will be in it forever.”

(Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 257)

In another verse, Allah says:

أَلَا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ (62) الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ (63) لَهُمُ الْبُشْرَى فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ لَا تَبْدِيلَ لِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ

Translation: Allah said: “Behold! Verily, for the friends of Allah there shall be no fear (about the future), nor shall they grieve. (The friends of Allah are) Those who believe and are ever pious in their actions. To them are glad tidings in this life and in the hereafter. There is no changing the words (decrees and promises) of Allah. This (success of Allah’s friends) is the greatest success.

(Surah Yunus, Verse 62-64)
