Isal al-Thawab

Question

Asalaam Alaikum,

I would like to know in regards to isal e sawab. what can we do for the loved ones who passed away.

JazakAllah Khairon

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, isal al-thawab or sending rewards of good deeds can be done with any good deed.[1]

There are many rewarding acts one can do for loved ones who have passed away. Some of the most rewarding are to support a student of din, to build a well, or to build a masjid or madrasa.

Consider the following ahadith:

It is narrated from Abu Hurayra (radiallahu ‘anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “When a person passes away, his deeds come to an end except three: a perpetual charity, knowledge from which others benefit, or righteous offspring who supplicates for him.”

(Sahih Muslim, 1631)

It is narrated from Sa‘d b. ‘Ubada (radiallahu ‘anhu) that he said, “O Rasulullah, Umm Sa‘d has passed away, so which form of charity would be best [for me to offer on her behalf]? He replied, ‘Water.’” So he dug a well and said, “This is for Umm Sa‘d.”

(Sunan Abu Dawud, 1681)

And Allah Ta‘ālā Knows Best.
