Can we use wine glasses and beer mugs?
Question
Assalamu Alaikim.Wa rahmatullahi wa batakatuhu.
I wanted to ask about the ruling in regards to use wine glassess / beer mugs. As is the common practice in parties, weddings and social gatherings. Jazakallahu Khairan.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.
As-salaamu `alaykum wa-ramatullahi wa-barakatuh.
If a utensil is made specifically for wine and beer and such a utensil is commonly associated with drinking wine and beer, then it is makrooh to use such a utensil.
If a utensil is for common use and not specifically for drinking wine and beer, then the use of such utensils is not makrooh[1]

لِأَنَّ هَذِهِ الظُّرُوفَ كَانَتْ مُخْتَصَّةً بِالْخَمْرِ فَلَمَّا حُرِّمَتْ الْخَمْرُ حُرِّمَ اسْتِعْمَالُ هَذِهِ الظُّرُوفِ تَشْدِيدًا فِي تَحْرِيمِ الْخَمْرِ لِيَتْرُكَهُ النَّاسُ
الأشباه والنظائر لابن نجيم (ص: 79)
وَمِنْ ذَلِكَ الْعَمَلُ الْمُفْسِدُ لِلصَّلَاةِ مُفَوَّضٌ إلَى
الْعُرْفِ لَوْ كَانَ بِحَيْثُ لَوْ رَآهُ يَظُنُّ أَنَّهُ خَارِجَ الصَّلَاةِ،
وَمِنْهَا: تَنَاوُلُ الثِّمَارِ السَّاقِطَةِ
وَفِي إجَارَةٍ الظِّئْرِ وَفِيمَا لَا نَصَّ فِيهِ مِنْ الْأَمْوَالِ الرِّبَوِيَّةِ يُعْتَبَرُ فِيهِ الْعُرْفُ فِي كَوْنِهِ كَيْلِيًّا أَوْ وَزْنِيًّا.
