Is flying kites permissible in Islam?
Question
Is flying kites permissible in Islam? My 6 year old wants to fly kites but my husband says it depicts Basant. Please guide.
Answer
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
Basant Panchami is a Hindu festival in the Punjab region that marks the starting of spring. This is a festival that also honors Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music and art. People dress in yellow and eat foods that are yellow in color. Kites are also flown in this festival and partygoers compete with one another[1].
If you are living in an area wherein Basant Panchami is celebrated, then avoid flying a kite during the festive season[2].

والأصل في الأشياء الإباحة. قال الله سبحانه وتعالى: {هُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا} [البقرة: 29] وقال سبحانه وتعالى: {قُلْ مَنْ حَرَّمَ زِينَةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي أَخْرَجَ لِعِبَادِهِ} [الأعراف: 32] .

والحل هو الأصل في الأشياء.

واعلم أن الأصل في الأشياء كلها سوى الفروج الإباحة قال الله تعالى {هو الذي خلق لكم ما في الأرض جميعا} [البقرة: 29] وقال {كلوا مما في الأرض حلالا طيبا} [البقرة: 168] وإنما تثبت الحرمة بعارض نص مطلق أو خبر مروي فما لم يوجد شيء من الدلائل المحرمة فهي على الإباحة
