May I use perfumes containing alcohol?
Question
I want to ask that can we use body spray and perfumes that have alcohol in it?Most of the body spray that i saw have alcohol in its ingrediant.i am worried whether we should use them or not.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is necessary to verify whether the alcohol is synthetic or not. Most colognes and perfumes nowadays contain synthetic alcohol which is permissible to use. If the alcohol is actually derived from dates and grapes, then this will considered impure and impermissible to apply to oneself.[1]

[1] واماغیر الاشربة الاربعة فلیست نجسة عند الامام ابی حنیفة رحمہ اللہ تعالی
وبھذا یتعین حکم الکحول المسکرة (Alcohol) التی عمت بہا البلوی الیوم، فانہا تستعمل فی کثیر من الاودیة والعطور، والمرکبات الاخریم فانہا ان اتخذت من العنب او التمر فلا سبیل الی حلتہا او طہارتہا، وان اتخذت من غیرھما فالامر فیہا سہل علی مذھب ابی حنیفة رحمہ اللہ تعالی، ولا یحرم استعمالہا للتداوی او لاغراض مباحة اخری ما لم تبلغ حد الاسکار، لانہا انما تستعمل مرکبة مع المواد الاخری، ولا یحکم بنجاستہا اخذا بقول ابی حنیفة رحمہ اللہ تعالی
وان معظم الکحول التی تستعمل الیوم فی الادویة والعطور وغیرھا: لا تتخذ من العنب او التمر، انما تتخذ من الحبوب او القشور او البترول وغیرہ، کما ذکربا فی باب بیع الخمر من کتاب البیوع، وحینئذ ھناک فسحة فی الاخذ بقول ابی حنیفة عند عموم البلوی، واللہ سبحانہ اعلم۔
