Wedding anniversary and birthday

Question

Is it permissible to celebrate wedding anniversaries ? Also, is it ok to celebrate one's birthday by giving them a gift or doing something special on another day other than the exact day? These little celebrations keep relationships alive and well. In addition, if we cannot celebrate these what can we actually do ?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

One does not have to commit wrong to maintain relationships. There are many other permissible ways of maintaining relationships. For example, visiting family members etc. Do not confine the visits to birthdays and anniversaries. If could be more than that. When one is ill or in grief, visit him and offer him support. Take part in permissible family gatherings in happy and adverse conditions. This is the way to maintain family relationship which is a true expression of one’s concern from his heart.
