Does zakat need to be paid on a home that is for personal use and how do you calculate the zakat if the house is purchased with a home loan.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
There is no zakat on a home purchased for personal use.[1]

وَتَجِبُ الزَّكَاةُ فِي كُلِّ مَالٍ سَوَاءٌ كَانَ نَامِيًا فَاضِلًا عَنْ الْحَاجَةِ الْأَصْلِيَّةِ أَوْ لَا كَثِيَابِ الْبِذْلَةِ وَالْمِهْنَةِ، وَالْعَلُوفَةِ، وَالْحَمُولَةِ، وَالْعَمُولَةِ مِنْ الْمَوَاشِي، وَعَبِيدِ الْخِدْمَةِ وَالْمَسْكَنِ، وَالْمَرَاكِبِ، وَكِسْوَةِ الْأَهْلِ وَطَعَامِهِمْ، وَمَا يُتَجَمَّلُ بِهِ مِنْ آنِيَةٍ أَوْ لُؤْلُؤٍ أَوْ فُرُشٍ وَمَتَاعٍ لَمْ يُنْوَ بِهِ التِّجَارَةُ، وَنَحْوِ ذَلِكَ. بدائع الصنائع في ترتيب الشرائع(11/2)
