Fatwa #303628 May 2001United Kingdom

Whenever I have gone in jamat I have heard that there are three positions for sitting while eating which are sunnah. Can you please give me the hadith substatiating this.

Answer

Abu Juhayfa (Radhiallaahu Anhu) narrates that Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi
Wasallam) said, 'I never eat while reclining.' He used to say, ' I am a
servant of Allah and sit and eat like a servant. He used to sit in a manner
that he was about to get up with the support of his knees.

The author of Mawhib says that while taking meals it is desirable to sit in
a manner that the knees are upward and the bottom of the feet touches the
ground or in a manner that only the right knee is kept upward and the left
knee touches the ground making a sitting posture. (Uswa-e-Rasul-e-Akram)
