Is it permissible to work in a betting shop?

Question

I am an internationl student in UK and working in a betting shop to manage my living expenses. Is that halal?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Betting is expressly prohibited in the Quran. It is prohibited to work in a betting shop as that will be aiding sin. Allah says: “and do not assist in sin”. You should seek an alternate source of income which is Halal. If you presently have expenses and no alternate source of income, you may continue working in the betting shop on condition you search for an alternate source of income and make istighfar.

Istighfar is to seek the forgiveness from Allah for adopting a sinful source of income and to maintain the resentment of the sinful act.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
