Is it allowed to rear birds as pets? Any punishments if it is not permitted?

Question

My dad is rearing a bird for the past seven years and inspite of us telling to let it free he's adamant.Please advice so that I can convince him,inshallah.

Answer

It is permissible to keep a bird as pet.
