There is a Pillsbury product that contains confectioners glaze, and in that there is shellac. I was wondering if you could look into this and inform on whether or not this is Halaal.

There is a Pillsbury product that contains confectioners glaze, and in that there is shellac. I was wondering if you could look into this and inform on whether or not this is Halaal.

In the name of Allāh, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Assalāmu ῾alaykum wa Rahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh
In principle, Insects are not impure as they do not have flowing blood.[1] However, insects (or any part of it) are impermissible to consume due to them being from the ‘khabā’ith’ (filth).[2]
Products containing ingredients derived from insects will only be permissible for external use. Shellac is a secretion derived from a female lac bug. This secretion will be halal based on the analogy of secretion derived from the bee, i.e. honey. However, during the process of manufacturing it into a glazing agent for an edible product, there are possibilities of traces and particles of this bug to be found in the product itself.
Therefore, edible products containing shellac will be unlawful for consumption.

[1] وأما الذي يعيش في البر فأنواع ثلاثة : ما ليس له دم أصلا وما ليس له دم سائل وما له دم سائل ، فما لا دم له مثل الجراد والزنبور والذباب والعنكبوت والخنفساء والعقرب والببغاء ونحوها لا يحل أكله إلا الجراد خاصة ، وكذلك ما ليس له دم سائل مثل الحية والوزغ وسام أبرص وجميع الحشرات وهو أم الأرض من الفأر والجراد والقنافذ والضب واليربوع وابن عرس ونحوها ولا خلاف في حرمة هذه الأشياء إلا في الضب فإنه حلال عند الشافعي رحمه الله تعالى. [2] ( ولا يحل ) ( ذو ناب يصيد بنابه أو مخلب يصيد بمخلبه من سبع أو طير ولا الحشرات ) هي صغار دواب الأرض واحدها حشرة...قال ابن عابدين: ( قوله واحدها حشرة ) بالتحريك فيهما : كالفأرة والوزغة وسام أبرص والقنفذ والحية والضفدع والزنبور والبرغوث والقمل والذباب والبعوض والقراد ، وما قيل إن الحشرات هوام الأرض كاليربوع وغيره ، ففيه أن الهامة ما تقتل من ذوات السم كالعقارب قهستاني. (رد المحتار, سعيد , ج6,ص304)
( وحل غراب الزرع ) لأنه يأكل الحب وليس من سباع الطير ولا من الخبائث قال رحمه الله : ( لا الأبقع - الذي يأكل الجيف - والضبع والضب والزنبور والسلحفاة والحشرات والحمر الأهلية والبغل ) يعني : هذه الأشياء لا تؤكل... وأما الضب والزنبور والسلحفاة والحشرات فلأنها من الخبائث وقد قال تعالى
{ ويحرم عليهم الخبائث } وما روي من الإباحة محمول على ما قبل التحريم. (البحر الرائق شرح كنز الدقائق,مكتبه رشيديه , ج8,ص172)
