Q: I am a mother of three children. My husband is a traveller, and often he%0D%0Ais out of home for many days. In his absence, I experience the following%0D%0Adifficulties due to not being able to drive: i) Lift for my children going%0D%0Aand returning to school, ii) Going to the Doctor, iii) Purchasing basic%0D%0Anecessities.%0D%0AIn view of the abovementioned and other similar difficulties, is it%0D%0Apermissible for me to drive?%0D%0AA: In principle, a female should stay within the confines of her home. It is%0D%0Anot permissible for her to emerge from her home without dire need and%0D%0Anecessity and without observing Hijaab (Purdah).%0D%0AIn dire need and necessity (approved by the Shari'ah), it is permissible for%0D%0Aa female to drive within 88 km. with the following conditions: i) There is%0D%0Ano alternative, ii) There is no apparent fear of life%2Frespect; and, iii)%0D%0AAdhering to the laws of Hijaab.
