Is the violation of Copyright Act of Books permissible in Islam?

Question

I am a student in University of Texas, USA... I want to know that in all countries the origional books are quite expensive... So the students use to make a photocopy or a duplicate print of the copy which is illegal considering copyright act.... Is it permissible in Islam?

Answer

Copying Computer software programmes is a violation of copyright laws, hence, not permissible.

If the act does not prohibit photocopying for personal use, then it will be permissible.
