Was Iblees an angel or a jinn?

Question

Imam Al Qurtubi says in his tafseer that the majority of scholars in the past, believed that Iblees was an angel (including Ibn Abbas). Could you tell me what is the more correct opinion? Was Iblees an angel or a jinn?

Answer

Iblees (Shaytaan) is a Jinn. He was given the position of an angel due to his excessive worship.
