Fatwa #640313 August 2002Pakistan

What place should the feelings of Patriotism and Nationalism have in a Muslim? Can a Muslim feel proud to be a citizen of his country and take part in Independence celebrations, etc.?

Question

Please explain these topics in detail. ?« PS: Pakistan¡¦s Independence Day is on August 14th.

Answer

A Muslim's primary objective is the Deen of Islam. He is spurred on by his
religion and not his ethnicity or geographical location. He is a Muslim
first and then a citizen.

Love for one's home country is only natural. However, celebrations marking
independent, etc. do not have any scope in Islam. These are Kuffaar-type
celebrations and should be avoided. Participating or even witnessing such
celebrations is prohibited.
