Please explain the asbabun nuzul of ayat19-20 surat Taubah, as well as verse 41

Answer

1. Imaam Baghawiy (RA) has recorded a narration of ibn Abbaas (Radhiallaahu
Anhu) that on the occasion of Badr (first battle fought by the Muslims in 1
AH), Abbaas (Radhiallaahu Anhu) was captured by the Muslims. He addressed
the Muslims thus, 'You people have accepted Imaan and migrated to Madina.
This does not exclude us of being praiseworthy as we are the people of the
Masjidul Haram and we hand over water to the pilgrims.' On this, Allah
revealed Aayat 19-20 of Surah Tawbah (Tafseer Mazhari vol.5 pg.201; Darul
Ishaat
2. This verse refers to the battle of Tabuk which was fought against the
Romans. Allah Ta'ala revealed this verse in order to distinguish the
hypocrites from the true believers. For this reason, Allah Ta'ala says,
'Come out in the path of Allah in any condition.' (Ma'ariful Qur'aan vol.4
pg.377; Darul Kitaab)
