When do we say ‘Mashallah’, or ‘SubhanAllah’, or ‘Alhamdulillah’, or ‘AllahuAkbar’, or ‘Auzubillah’, in our daily lives? I get confused as to the appropriate usage of these terms.

Question

Please explain the differences in meaning, and the appropriateness in their usage; Jazak-Allah. As an example, when people hear some news, at times they say AllahuAkbar, some-other time, they say, SubhanAllah, etc.

Answer

These are Arabic terms which express feelings of happiness / sorrow. The following are used for the following:

1. Maasha Allah ? to express happiness

2. Alhamdulillah ? to express satisfaction

3. Allaahu Akbar ? to express surprise

4. A?oodhu billah ? to express dislike
