Majlis Articles

Question

I have read two articles of Majlis regarding your fatwa on Pap smear and time shares and being vegetarian.

Have you read them? What are your thoughts on those articles?

I must state that it appears to me that Majlis mixes up Fiqhi issues with what he thinks is a moral issue and declare them as Haram.

It appears he also goes into emotional trauma. I must state the Pap smear article was a real laughing stock by many especially the medical fraternity.

Your fatwa was in the context of a question, will a Pap smear break a fast. He averted that and went into an emotional trauma and could not believe the reality of a Pap smear test. He calls women who undergo a Pap smear test immoral and prostitutes. I thought of a similar question about a male who has to undergo a testicular cancer test. Will that break the fast? The simple answer is no.

Whether one should go for Pap smear test or testicular cancer test in the state of fasting is another issue. The issue is one already took the test, so will that break the fast?

The issue is not whether it is immoral or not. It is a reality and I understand your fatwa was from a practical and realistic point of view. However, I just thought I should ask your comments on Majlis articles.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

I have reviewed my Fatwa on:

1. Timesharing

2. Pap smear

3. Vegetarian

I maintain my view on all three issues. I disagree with Majlis on all three issues.
