Lying in a resume and getting a job from it
Question
There are many IT training classes where the material is taught and the students are given jobs based on fake resumes.
Basically students will take a 8 week course in the IT program and afterwards the school helps the student land a job. There have been a number of successful students that completed the course and landed pretty well paid positions in these fields
So is it permissible to fake a resume and if some one lands a job through this, then is the job permissible?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Your concern of the permissibility of your actions is a sign of your Iman and Allah consciousness.
Truthfulness and honesty are fundamental traits in Islam. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said in the following Hadith:
عَلَيْكُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ فَإِنَّ الصِّدْقَ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْبِرِّ وَإِنَّ الْبِرَّ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ وَمَا يَزَالُ الرَّجُلُ يَصْدُقُ وَيَتَحَرَّى الصِّدْقَ حَتَّى يُكْتَبَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ صِدِّيقًا وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْكَذِبَ فَإِنَّ الْكَذِبَ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْفُجُورِ وَإِنَّ الْفُجُورَ يَهْدِي إِلَى النَّارِ وَمَا يَزَالُ الرَّجُلُ يَكْذِبُ وَيَتَحَرَّى الْكَذِبَ حَتَّى يُكْتَبَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ كَذَّابً (صحيح مسلم 2607 سنن ابي داود 4989)
Translation: Adhere to the truth, for the truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to Paradise, and a man continues to speak the truth and endeavors to tell the truth until he is recorded as truthful by Allah. And avoid telling of a lie, for telling of a lie leads to obscenity, and obscenity leads to Hell Fire, and a man continues to lie and endeavors to lie until he is recorded as a liar by Allah.
لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ غَشَّ (سنن ابي داود 3452)
Translation: The one who deceives is not from amongst us.
Speaking lies and deceiving are major sins. It is not permissible to lie and fake a resume to get a job.
If one obtains a job using a fake resume, the income will be for services provided and it will be Halal. However, one should make Tawbah and Istighfar for speaking lies and deception.
