Gifts from the banks
Question
My question is regarding redeeming cash back and benifits from a credit card? It is mentioned in your website that it is allowed to do so and it is a gift, but as per my knowledge accepting gifts from someone whos major proportion of income is from Haram source is not allowed in Fiqah Hanafi, so then how it is allowed to accept cash back and benefits from bank when major proportion of bank income is interest based and Haram. Please Reply. Jazak'Allah
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is a misconception that the major earnings a bank are solely from interest/usury.
A bank’s financial holdings and earnings consists of the following:
1. Capital investments.
2. Deposits from customers.
3. Banking fees and charges.
4. Loans received from the reserve bank.
5. Interest income
From the above, only interest, is definitively haram and is mixed with other sources of money. In the situation where the earnings of a person/business is a mixture of halāl and harām, and the halāl income is in the majority, then it will be permissible to receive gifts, trade and deal with him.
The bank’s portion of interest money is less than the other monies which the bank owns. It will therefore be permissible to accept gifts from the bank. [1] [2][3] [4]

الباب الثاني عشر في الهدايا والضيافات ) أهدى إلى رجل شيئا أو أضافه إن كان غالب ماله من الحلال فلا بأس إلا أن يعلم بأنه حرام ، فإن كان الغالب هو الحرام ينبغي أن لا يقبل الهدية ، ولا يأكل الطعام إلا أن يخبره بأنه حلال ورثته أو استقرضته من رجل ، كذا في الينابيع .
