Reciting Surah Yasin in a Graveyard
Question
Is it permissible to read Surah Yasin at the graveyard? I was reading beside my father’s grave when an elderly stopped me from reciting Yasin. He told me just to make Dua for him.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is permissible to recite Surah Yasin in the graveyard with the intention of Isaal-e-Thawab for the deceased.[1] However, do not regard the recitation of Yasin by the graveyard as necessary. One may recite any portion from the Quran in the graveyard.

عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ دَخَلَ الْمَقَابِرَ فَقَرَأَ سُورَةَ يس خَفَّفَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَكَانَ لَهُ بِعَدَدِ مَنْ فِيهَا حَسَنَاتٌ
Anas (Radhyallahu Anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: Whoever enters the graveyard and reads Surah Yasin, their punishment will be lightened on that day and he will receive reward equal to the number of people buried in the graveyard.

عمدة القاري شرح صحيح البخاري (3/ 118)
قَالَ الْخطابِيّ: فِيهِ دَلِيل على اسْتِحْبَاب تِلَاوَة الْكتاب الْعَزِيز على الْقُبُور، لِأَنَّهُ إِذا كَانَ يُرْجَى عَن الْمَيِّت التَّخْفِيف بتسبيح الشّجر، فتلاوة الْقُرْآن الْعَظِيم أعظم رَجَاء وبركة. قلت: اخْتلف النَّاس فِي هَذَا الْمَسْأَلَة، فَذهب أَبُو حنيفَة وَأحمد، رَضِي الله تَعَالَى عَنْهُمَا، إِلَى وُصُول ثَوَاب قِرَاءَة الْقُرْآن إِلَى الْمَيِّت، لما روى أَبُو بكر النجار فِي كتاب (السّنَن) عَن عَليّ بن أبي طَالب، رَضِي الله تَعَالَى عَنهُ، أَن النَّبِي صلى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسلم قَالَ: (من مر بَين الْمَقَابِر فَقَرَأَ: قل هُوَ الله أحد، أحد عشر مرّة، ثمَّ وهب أجرهَا للأموات أعطي من الْأجر بِعَدَد الْأَمْوَات) . وَفِي (سنَنه) أَيْضا عَن أنس يرفعهُ: (من دخل الْمَقَابِر فَقَرَأَ سُورَة: يس، خفف الله عَنْهُم يَوْمئِذٍ) . وَعَن أبي بكر الصّديق، رَضِي الله تَعَالَى عَنهُ، قَالَ رَسُول الله صلى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسلم: (من زار قبر وَالدية. أَو أَحدهمَا، فَقَرَأَ عِنْده، أَو عِنْدهمَا يس، غفر لَهُ)
