Sunnah du’ā whilst eating

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykumwa-rahmatullāhiwa-barakātuh.

Nabī Ṣallāhu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam  has stated in the following ahādīth: [1]

"الطاعم الشاكر بمنزلة الصائم الصابر" (سنن ابن ماجه)

Translation: “A grateful eater will have a reward like that of a patient fasting person” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

"إن الله ليرضى عن العبد أن يأكل الأكلة فيحمده عليها أو يشرب الشربة فيحمده عليها" (صحيح مسلم) 

Translation: “Allah will be pleased with His slave who praises Him when he eats or drinks" (Ṣahīh Muslim) 

It is understood from the above ahādīth that one should praise Allāh Ta'āla and express gratitude as well. Accordingly, if one says: اللهم لك الحمد ولك الشكر whilst eating, he will be practicing on the above mentioned ahādīth. One may praise and express gratitude to Allāh Ta'āla in any words. It is not necessary to say اللهم لك الحمد ولك الشكر.
