The name Amaan

Question

Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuhu

I hope that you are well

I know it must be a busy time with the virus around but if it is
possible please can I get some assistance in choosing a name for my son.

I'm deciding between the names Muaaz or Amaan.

I would also like to confirm if the meaning of Amaan is the most
loveable or protection without fear as various websites have different
meanings?

Any guidance would be appreciated

Stay safe
Jazakallah

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu 'alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We make the same Duaa for your son which Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam made for the son of Umme Sulaim (Radiyallahu Anha):

Translation: "May Allah place blessings for you in him and make him righteous and Allah fearing."[i]

We have been advised in the Hadith to keep good names for our children, as the name of a person has an effect on his ways and characteristics.

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has mentioned:

Translation: Whoever is graced with a child, he should give him a beautiful name and beautify his character.

Muaaz (معاذ) means one who is protected and safeguarded.[ii]

Amaan (امان) means one who is safe from fear and one who has peace of mind and tranquillity.[iii]

Both are suitable names with good meanings, however we advise keeping the name Muaaz as it was the name of many Sahabah, including the great Sahabi, Muaaz bin Jabal (Radiyallahu Anhu).

And Allah Ta'āla Knows Best
