How should we determine if a dress is transparent or not?
Question
Assalamualaikum. It will be really helpful if you kindly answer the question that is bothering me a lot. How should we determine if a dress is transparent or not? While praying salah, I wear a burka over my normal dress and my body shape and colour cannot be seen even in a lit up area. But if I hold the dresses in front of my eye, then I can see what is on the other side through the dresses. Are these dresses considered transparent? I never payed this much attention to this before. I simply used to check the dresses by putting my hand under it and when I saw that my hand was not visible, I took them to be non transparent and used to pray salah with the dresses. Kindly guide me, regarding if my salahs were valid or not.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, it is not permissible for a woman to wear clothing that reveals her body. The clothing will be considered transparent when a woman’s body can be seen while wearing the clothing. The transparency is not dependent on being able to see through it while the clothing is in front of one's eyes. [1]
In the enquired situation, your body is not visible while you are wearing the burka. Accordingly, that burka is not considered transparent. All your Salah in the burka is valid.

وحد الستر أن لا يرى ما تحته حتى لو سترها بثوب رقيق يصف ما تحته لا يجوز وشمل ما إذا كان بحضرته أحد أو لم يكن حتى لو صلى في بيت مظلم عريانا وله ثوب طاهر لا يجوز إجماعا

(قوله لا يصف ما تحته) بأن لا يرى منه لون البشرة احترازا عن الرقيق ونحو الزجاج (قوله ولا يضر التصاقه) أي بالألية مثلا، وقوله وتشكله من عطف المسبب على السبب. وعبارة شرح المنية: أما لو كان غليظا لا يرى منه لون البشرة إلا أنه التصق بالعضو وتشكل بشكله فصار شكل العضو مرئيا فينبغي أن لا يمنع جواز الصلاة لحصول الستر

والثوب الرقيق الذي يصف ما تحته لا تجوز الصلاة فيه كذا في التبيين ولو كان عليه قميص ليس عليه غيره وكان إذا سجد لا يرى أحد عورته لكن لو نظر إليه إنسان من تحته رأى عورته فهذا ليس بشيء قليل الانكشاف عفو لأن فيه بلوى.
