Making ta’līm seated on the table for a meal - Is this permissible?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible to sit around the table and make ta’līm. However, it is preferable and from the dictates of adab to sit down in a befitting manner and make ta’līm. Consider the following āyat;

وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنْصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ  (الأعراف:204)

Translation: So when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.

Therefore, one should sit and listen attentively when ta’līm is taking place as the verses of the noble Qur'an and Ahādīth are recited.

Some of the adab of taleem are:

• Listen with concentration.
• Sit in an appropriate manner.
• Make intention of practicing upon and passing on to others whatever you hear.
• Whenever the blessed name of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam is mentioned, recite a short Durood like Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam.
