Writing Āyāt of the Qur’ān with the left hand - Is this permissible?

Question

If someone is left handed and want to do Arabic calligraphy of Ayahs. Will it be permissible for him/her to do so with her left hand?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, it is preferable and recommended that a person carries out all noble matters with his right hand. Consider the following hadīṭh:

عن عائشة، قالت: كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يعجبه التيمن، في تنعله، وترجله، وطهوره، وفي شأنه كله

 ( صحيح البخاري 168)

Translation: It is reported from ‘Āishah Radiyallāhu ‘Anhā that Nabī Sallāhu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam loved his right when wearing shoes, combing, for his purification and in fact for all good.” (Bukhārī 168)

However, many people by nature are left-handed. Therefore it will be permissible for such people to write Āyāt of the Qur’ān with the left hand.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
