How do I gain forgiveness for intentionally missing a lot of fasts in my life?

Question

I have intentionally missed a lot of fasts in my life. How do I gain forgiveness?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Fasting is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam. It is an act of worship through which one attains closeness to Almighty Allah.

See the following Ahadith regarding the importance and virtue of fasting in the month of Ramadan:

Translation: Islām is built around five pillars: The testimony that there is no god except Allah and that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is his slave and messenger, establishing the prayer, giving Zakāt (obligatory charity), performing Hajj (pilgrimage) and fasting in Ramadan. (Sahīh Muslim: 45)

Translation: Whoever fasts Ramadān out of faith and in the hope of reward will be forgiven his previous sins.

(Sunan-al-Nasai: 2203)

Allah Ta’ala says:

Translation: O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous. (Surah Baqarah – Verse 183)

Translation: And every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting. (Surah Baqarah – Verse 185)

In principle, if one deliberately misses a fast of the month of Ramadan without any justifiable excuse in Shariah, the person will be sinful, he must compensate for it by keeping a Qadha fast out of the month of Ramadan on any day of the Islamic year except the five prohibited days of fasting i.e. Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha and Ayyam-e- Tashreeq (i.e. the three days after Eid ul Adha). No Kaffārah (expiation) will occur in this situation. [1]

If a Muslim intentionally breaks one or many fasts during the month of Ramadān with no justifiable excuse, he will be required to compensate with one Kaffārah (expiation) by observing consecutive fasts for two lunar months and Qadha fasts equivalent to the number of fasts he broke. [2]

If one begins his Kaffarah on the first day of a lunar month, then the Kaffarah will terminate with the termination of the second consecutive lunar month, even if both the months are twenty-nine days each. If one does not begin his Kaffarah on the first of a lunar month, then he will have to fast for a total number of sixty days.[3] He should also make sincere Tawbah for deliberately breaking his fasts.

If the sixty days is interrupted without a valid reason in Shariah, for example, a severe illness that makes fasting very difficult, then one must recommence with the expiation of sixty consecutive fasts.

If one is unable to fast the sixty days without a legitimate excuse then he can:

a.      feed sixty poor people, two full meals a day or

b.     feed one poor person, two meals a day for sixty days.

The food given to the poor will be according to their average consumption.

In the enquired situation, in order to make up for the missed fasts, you must calculate the number of fasts you have missed since attaining puberty. If you cannot arrive at an exact number, you may estimate the number of missed fasts and begin covering up for them.

The method which you will adopt, is that for every missed fast, make the intention that this is the first fast that was missed. You may continue doing this until you have total conviction that you have completed all the Qadha fasts. If you had intentionally broken any fast, then make Kaffarah as mentioned above.

Brother, you enquire regarding gaining forgiveness from Allah Ta’ala. Allah is Al-Ghafoor, which means The Most Forgiving. When a servant commits a sin and then sincerely seeks forgiveness from Allah, Allah becomes happy with him and completely forgives him for his sin. In fact, not only does this servant receive forgiveness, but he also becomes the beloved of Allah. Therefore, it is not difficult to gain the forgiveness of Allah.

Sincerely engage in Tawbah and Istighfaar and enthusiastically follow it up with your Qadha fasts. Allah will forgive you and make you His beloved.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
