Can I shave or cut my nails? Is it Wajib to cut them after Qurbani?

Question

Can I shave or cut my nails? Is it Wajib to cut them after Qurbani or Sunnah or Mustahab?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Prophet Muhammad (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) is reported to have said:

إِذَا دَخَلَ الْعَشْرُ وَعِنْدَهُ أُضْحِيَّةٌ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُضَحِّيَ، فَلَا يَأْخُذَنَّ شَعْرًا، وَلَا يَقْلِمَنَّ ظُفُرًا

Translation: If anyone of you intends to offer sacrifice, he should not get his hair cut or nails trimmed. (Muslim, 5160)

Accordingly, the Fuqahaa (Jurists) have mentioned that it is Mustahab for one doing Qurbani to abstain from cutting one’s nails and hair during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.

However, if one has not cut one’s hair for forty days or more, one should cut one’s hair irrespective of the above.

Furthermore, if one’s nails are so long that it may injure one, one may cut one’s nails.[i][i]
